800 Youth Leaders

Last weekend was a lot of fun for multiple reasons… but one of the big ones was my time hanging with over 800 youth workers at the YS Palooza event I taught at in Philly on Saturday. Allow me a minute to brag about Youth Specialties (YS) real quick.

I don’t work for YS. I speak at a lot of their conferences, and have written a handful of books published by them… but I’m just a “hired gun,” so to speak. As a guy who speaks at a lot of different conferences and events, I have to commend YS for the amazing job they are doing helping the front line youth worker.

Take last Saturday for example. At this event they brought in four national speakers and an amazing band for two days of action packed training, snacks, lunch, dinner… which a youth worker could have got for just $69 (early bird) or… if an entire church registered, they could pay $399 and bring as many of their leaders as they wanted (and some brought almost 40 leaders, basically paying a little more than $10 a person). The end result was youth workers getting encouraged and equipped.

Let’s just say happy youth workers make me happy!

The main reason I’m commending YS is the feedback I’ve been getting from the youth workers who attended these events. My Twitter was buzzing for a few days afterwards about the training and the event as a whole. As a speaker, it was a great experience as well.

    My late husband and I were in youth ministry for 23 years (loved it so much!) before being called to plant a church. I believe in the necessity and importance of youth ministry and deeply appreciate those on the front lines serving with kids – whether volunteer, part time or full time. It is a high and difficult, as well as fulfilling, calling.
    I am having a dilemma… I am struggling with the “freedoms” many in leadership are living out for all to see, including their kids… i. e. casual drinking and smoking.
    We (the church my new husband and I are involved in) currently have a full time youth guy who smokes. I’ve never seen him smoke but smell it on him whenever we talk, and it seems there are many whose liberty takes priority over caring for the weaker brother.
    I don’t want to come off as legalistic… I am trying to be prayerful about this consistently…
    Have I just misunderstood, all these years, the call to live above reproach and the caution that leaders will incur a stricter judgement or is this something that should still be addressed in our current church culture?

    • Wendy, smoking is an interesting issue. It’s addicting, it’s life threatening… it’s no fun. I’ve known many brothers and sisters who struggled with it. Did it make them not fit to serve? No. Did it make them not fit to lead? I don’t think so. As for being role models to kids? That’s a tough one. Personally, I believe that if a youth leader smokes, it should be something communicated upon hiring. If you’re not the pastor, who knows if that was communicated. Maybe he’s trying to quit. Who knows. But what we do know is we should show this guy love. If you see some other red flags… you might wanna ask him about it, in a supportive way (like, “I’m someone you can talk with about this” way). Something to pray about.
